Colosseum

Colosseum is a very grand elliptical sloping gallery with seats for spectators in  the city of  Rome. It is a oval stadium with tiers of seats with an arena in which contests are held.At a time 50,000 spectators can be seated in the gallery.This Colosseum stadium is actually built by Emperor Vespasian,Flavian Dynasty.Dramas,gladiatorial games,mock sea battles,Animal hunts are some common happenings that takes place in Colosseum around 80 A.D .But in current scenario this colosseum is ruined by earthquakes and stone-robbers. Colosseum was completed and inaugrated by Emperor Vespasian’s Son,Titus.Inaugural ceremony was very grand and morethan 9000 wild animals were used during the inaugural games.Inaugural function alone takes 100 days.Vespasian’s younger son,remodelled further and constructed a series of tunnels for the house animals and slaves.Prisoner’s of wars and slaves are usual fighters in the performances.

To increase seating capacity he built a gallery to the top of the Colosseum.6th century is the period where last recorded games held. The Pope of vatican city leads a torchlit “Way of the Cross” procession to the amphitheatre ,On every good Friday.1000 men were used to install a canopy made of canvas to shelter people or things from rain or sun.This awning is rightly called velarium.
